Anton Martynov was born in Moscow in 1969 to a family of physicists. He began to play the piano at the age of 3 and the violin 2 years later. At the age of 14, he studied at the Gnessine School of Music with Elena Malkina and Irina Svetlova, then continued at the Gnessine Academy with Vladimir Spivakov and Valentin Berlinski, and then with Dora Schwarzberg in Brescia and Gigino Maestri at the Milan Conservatory. At 16 he began playing as a soloist and a few years afterwards recorded Brahms’ Violin Concerto Op. 77, later broadcast on ARTE channel.
At the age of 22 he moved to Italy where he was prizewinner of the Stresa International Competition and then to France where he joined the Anton Quartet, first as a violist (he learnt to play the viola in three days) and as a violinist afterwards.
His versatility at playing various instruments (the violin, the piano, the viola, the harpsichord) and his fondness for composition lead him to conduct orchestras. In 2002, Marc Minkowski invited him to conduct and play the programmes on modern instruments with the Musiciens du Louvre of which Anton was leader from 2001 to 2005.
During the following three years, he devoted himself to the organ and discovered an incredibly rich repertoire, Bach’s works notably, of which he later made several transcriptions for string trio.
Taking up the violin again in 2009, his chamber music partners now include : Martha Argerich, Boris Berezovsky, Olli Mustonen, Håvard Gimse, Marie-Josèphe Jude, Michel Béroff, Roustem Saitkoulov, Denis Kozhukhin, Franck Braley, Victor Asunción, Elena Rozanova, Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, Akane Sakai, Ekaterina Derzhavina, Apostolos Palios, Natalia Morozova, Oleg Marchev, Denis Pascal, Pierre Reach, Alasdair Beatson, Ivry Gitlis (with whom he works as pianist as well), Vadim Repin, Michaël Guttman, Philippe Graffin, Geza Hosszu-Legocky, Tatiana Samuil, Jean-Marc Varjabedian-Phillips, Gérard Caussé, Natalia Tchitch, Toby Hoffman, Andreas Brantelid, Xavier Phillips, Henri Demarquette, David Waterman, Vittorio Ceccanti, Leonardo Altino, Martti Rousi, Boris Andrianov, Diana Ligeti, Tatiana Vassilieva, Dyonissis Grammenos, David Guerrier, and the Manfred Quartet.
Conductor and composer Federico Maria Sardelli dedicated his Violin Concerto to Anton and the recording of their collaboration in May 2013 received 5 stars in the Diapason review.
He recently played in the Madrid Auditorium, in Vila-Seca Auditorium, Donizetti Theatre in Bergamo and The 20th Century Theatre in London. He is the guest at the festivals of Lugano, Villars, Pietrasanta, Cortona, Ravenna, Kuhmo, Venice, Saint-Nazaire, Recife, Lelystad, Calenzana, Athens, Bagnères de Bigorre, Chirens, Novosibirsk and Montenegro and plays as a soloist with the Swiss Italian Orchestra (Lugano), the Apollo Ensemble (the Hague), the Recife Festival Orchestra (Brazil), the Maggio Musicale and Modo Antiquo (Florence), the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, the Novossibirsk Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra (Russia), the Paris Camerata, the Cantelli Orchestra (Milan), the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra and the State Symphony Orchestra and Olten Philharmonic Orchestra of Izmir (Turkey) and conducts the latter six with an excellent reaction from the press.
As a versatile and nonstandard musician, Anton Martynov takes on a personal and singular repertoire that he enriches with his own compositions and transcriptions. His talent is hailed by the pianist Martha Argerich and the violinist Ivry Gitlis, to whom he dedicated a Biographical Overture composed in 2012.
His engagements in 2016 include concerts with Martha Argerich and Eduardo Hubert at Lugano festival and international masterclasses, in collaboration with Ivry Gitlis.
Anton Martynov is the former artistic director of the Rive Gauche Musique Concert Season in Paris since its foundation in 2009 and is now artistic director of the Printemps du Violon Festival in Paris.
He plays a beautiful violin made by Nicolò Gagliano in 1732.
